SMD - Sälzer Modular Design
SMD modules are individually prefabricated and tested all-in-one modules, which are stored in sufficient quantities in the SMD Service. From basic switch modules, mounting form and operating modules, SMD Service can assemble any switch requested by the customer and pack it ready for delivery in no time..

In order to gain an insight into the SMD System of the Sälzer Electric Group the most important terms are annotated below.
It is said that the cam switch principle had been developed before 1900 by Friedrich Natalis (1864–1935). Mr. Natalis had been an employee of the Schuckert Company since 1897 and later at Siemens-Schuckert. It is said that Schuckert had delivered “cam switches with cam drums and switches working with springs (DRP 88586) since 1895. Over the years the terminology “cam switches” became well recognized.

Since 1956 Sälzer, due to its innovative designs, had a decisive influence on the fact that cam switches replaced the drum switches. In order to gain even bigger flexibility and to be able to deliver worldwide within 24 hours, Sälzer introduced the SMD System (Sälzer Modular Design).

Rotary Cam Switches are individually programmable.
Disconnect switches function on the same principle as rotary cam switches. However the contacts are forced guided at opening and closing. They were especially designed for load-breaking of main circuits with a switching angle of 90°. They are offered as ON/OFF switches or as changeover switch with OFF position (3-4-pole). Disconnect Switches measure up to the DIN EN IEC norm (electric equipment of machines) and are commonly used as Main/Emergency-Off switches or ON/OFF switches.

The possible switching programs on disconnect switches are limited.
Based on the principle of the SMD System, a basic switch module consists of the particular type and the required switching program. The type defines the amperage rating and the design of the basic switch depending on its product line. The switching program specifies the switching logic of the basic switch module.

The mounting form consists of the mounting form module and the operator module and can be mixed in shape and colour based on desired application.
